HALACHA OF THE WEEK: HAIRCUTS & SHAVING WHEN LAG BA'OMER FALLS ON SUNDAY When Lag Ba’Omer falls on Sunday, shaving and haircuts are permitted on the Friday before because of "kavod Shabbat" [Shulchan Aruch Orech Chaim Rama 493:2]. But why is this Shabbat, the day before Lag Ba'Omer different than any other Shabbat during sefirat ha'omer?
The reason stems from the fact that tachanun is not said at mincha on erev Lag Ba’Omer. As a result, erev Lag Ba'Omer - in this case Shabbat - already has some of the status of Lag Ba'Omer. But since haircuts and shaving are forbidden on Shabbat, the allowance to do so is pushed back to Friday [Nodeh B’Yehuda 1:28]. (According to some, it is best to wait until after midday on Friday [Halichot Shlomo Moadim II, Chapter 11 note 79].)
Many forbid shaving and haircutting on Thursday night if one will have time to do so on Friday [Mishna Berurah 260:5, Revivot Ephraim 1:338 and 4:131].
However, if one did not shave or get a haircut before Shabbat, after Shabbat one must wait until the morning of Lag B'Omer before doing so [Halichot Shlomo ibid., note 31].
DVAR TORAH "For Bnei Yisrael are servants to Me, they are My servants, whom I have taken out of the land of Egypt -- I am Hashem, your G-d." (Vayikra 25:55)
HaRav Joseph Dov Soloveitchik ztz"l observed that there are two ways to express servitude. One is reflected in the language of the Haggadah: "We were slaves to Pharaoh." The second is reflected, for example, in the verse (Bereishit 24:34), "I am Avraham's slave" (i.e., the possessive form). What is the difference between these two forms?
The Rav explained that the first expression reflects a purely legal relationship: "I am my own person, and I happen to be a slave to Pharaoh at present." In contrast, the second expression means that my very essence is bound up with my master. (In fact, Chazal even commented that Avraham's slave Eliezer was similar in appearance to his master!) (Festival of Freedom p.46)
Based on this explanation, the verse cited above can be understood as follows: Our relationship with G-d begins as a formal legal relationship of Master and servant—"Bnei Yisrael are servants to Me." However, once G-d redeemed us from Egypt, our relationship changed—"they are My servants." Our entire identity became connected to G-d as we became His chosen nation.
